Project Scope/Background
The City is planning improvements to Blue Heron Road to address aging pavement, stormwater drainage, water system needs, and sewer repairs. Blue Heron Road is a local residential street beginning at South Shore Boulevard, continuing approximately 0.3 miles to a dead end.
What is being improved?
- Roadway: The existing pavement needs replacement. The road is relatively narrow, ranging from about 15 to 25 feet wide, with limited space along the edges. The project will evaluate roadway improvements while working within the site's existing terrain and other constraints.
- Stormwater: Blue Heron Road was built without a complete stormwater drainage system. Today, much of the rainwater soaks into the ground along the road's shoulders, while some existing drainage directs runoff into the lake. The project will improve stormwater drainage and add treatment to help remove pollutants before runoff reaches the lake.
- Water system: An 8-inch water main installed in 1980 runs beneath the entire length of the project area. The project team will assess the condition of the water main and make repairs or replacements if needed. The five existing fire hydrants will also be replaced.
- Sewer line: An 8-inch sewer pipe installed in 1963 runs beneath the center of Blue Heron Road and serves homes on the uphill side of the street. Several sections of the sewer line need repairs. The project will evaluate options such as repairing the pipe from the inside with a liner or replacing sections of the pipe.
Schedule
- Design: 2027
- Construction: 2028
Project Updates
October 2026
The City has issued a Request for Proposals from qualified engineering firms to provide engineering services for the design of the project. Once design kicks off in 2027, there will be opportunities for public involvement and participation.
